The Grotto in the Great Garden of the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen was built in 1676. Its walls were originally decorated with sea shells, crystals, glass and minerals, and were a cool place to withdraw to during the summer’s heat. Since their restoration and redesign by Niki de Saint Phalle for the World Exposition EXPO 2000, the Grotto has been brought back to life again to enchant visitors with its colourful, sparkling interior.
