At the heart of the museum is the permanent exhibition called ‘750 Years of Hannover’, which shows how the city has changed down the centuries. Its development from the time of the Principality of Calenberg (in around 1600) to the end of the Kingdom of Hanover (in 1866) can be explored in the State History department. Among the exhibits to be admired here are the golden carriages of the Guelph era.
The ‘History of the City’ section traces Hannover’s long journey from its roots as a medieval country town to a sizeable city. In the third department, visitors can find out more about rural life from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Special exhibitions on specific themes and numerous events complete the repertoire.
