April 8, 1967 is considered the birth of the old town flea market in Hanover. Action artist Reinhard Schamuhn brought the idea from Paris to Hanover based on the model of the "marché aux puces" and set up a flea market for the first time at the Holzmarkt around the Oskar Winter fountain.

The old town flea market was sealed with a very special baptism: at 4 p.m. sharp at the start of the flea market, Shamuhn tipped a bottle of water from the Seine into the Leine. At the same time, a bottle of water from the Leine was poured into the Seine in Paris.

It was not until 1972 that the flea market was relocated to the location on the Hoher Ufer, which is still known today, by Michael Gehrke, who was responsible for the image of the city at the time. It was also Gehrke who established the weekly rhythm of the old town flea market.
